A merino travel capsule is a small set of soft wool pieces that cover most of a trip without filling a suitcase. Merino’s natural odour resistance and temperature regulation are why one-bag travellers keep coming back to it. This guide builds a practical 12-piece women’s list around independent brands we are covering: Unbound Merino, wool&, and Encircled.

Prices and product names below were checked on brand sites in early November 2026. We have not wear-tested every item ourselves; where we cite brand claims (odour resistance, Woolmark, B Corp), we note that they come from the brand.

Why merino works for one-bag travel

  • Odour control: brands such as Unbound Merino market naturally antibacterial fibres that stay fresher between washes.
  • Temperature regulation: useful on planes that swing from cold cabin to warm terminal.
  • Packability: thin merino tees and dresses compress smaller than cotton equivalents of the same warmth.
  • Less laundry: fewer spares needed for a two-week trip.

Merino is not magic. It can pill, it needs gentle washing, and cheap “merino blend” pieces vary widely. Stick to clear fibre content on the product page.

The 12-piece list

Treat this as a template, not a rigid uniform. Swap colours to match your life. Approximate prices are from the brand sites on our check date.

Tops (5)

  • 2 merino crew or v-neck tees — Unbound Merino women’s crews from about $68–$98; wool& tees such as Sloan / Zoe / Morgan around $84–$94.
  • 1 long-sleeve merino crew — Unbound women’s long-sleeve around $110.
  • 1 tank or rib tank — for layering under dresses or jackets (Unbound lists several tank styles).
  • 1 compact hoodie or soft layer — Unbound Compact Travel Hoodie (women’s $158); or Encircled Dressy Sweatshirt / Sojourn layers if you prefer modal blends.

Bottoms (3)

  • 1 travel pant — Unbound Merino Travel Pants roughly $195–$235 depending on cut; or Encircled Wanderer Pant at $204 (MicroModal, made in Toronto — not merino, but a strong travel pant in the same capsule logic).
  • 1 legging or soft pant — wool& Summit Pocket Legging $138.
  • 1 short or sleep short (optional swap) — for hot destinations or hotel evenings.

Dresses & one-pieces (2)

  • 1 merino dress — Unbound A-Line Tank Dress $158; wool& swing dresses such as Rowena / Willow around $148 or Eliza Swing Dress $178.
  • 1 jumpsuit or second dress — Unbound Merino Travel Jumpsuit $178, or keep a second dress colour instead.

Layers & extras (2)

  • 1 wrap or scarf layer — Encircled Jetsetter Wrap $139 (Tencel Lyocell and merino wool knit; wears as scarf, shawl or wrap).
  • 1 sleep set or underwear spare — Unbound lists merino underwear and sleep pieces; pack what you actually rewear.

That is twelve flexible slots. On a week-long city trip you might drop the jumpsuit and second dress. On a two-week Europe winter trip, keep both layers and add a coat you already own.

Outfit formulas

  • Travel day: tee + travel pant + hoodie + wrap on the plane.
  • Museum / walking day: long-sleeve + legging or pant + dress layered as a tunic if the cut allows.
  • Dinner: merino dress + wrap; swap tee colour underneath if the dress is sleeveless.
  • Laundry day: wash tees and underwear in a sink at night; hang to dry. Dress and pant cover the next day.

Flow Check: Encircled

  • What it is: Multi-functional travel clothing, B Corp, sewn in Canada.
  • Who it’s for: Packers who want convertible layers and soft modal/merino mixes.
  • Price range: Jetsetter Wrap $139; Chrysalis Cardi $208; Wanderer Pant $204.

Washing merino on the road

  • Follow the care label. Most fine merino prefers cold wash, gentle cycle or hand wash.
  • Skip the hotel dryer when you can; lay flat or hang.
  • Pack a small bottle of mild detergent or wool wash sheets.
  • Rotate pieces so nothing is washed every night — that is half the point of merino.

Who this capsule is not for

If you need formal tailoring every day, pure merino tees will not replace a blazer set (though Encircled’s Unblazer line exists for that problem). If you run very hot, test one tee before buying a full kit. If your budget is under $400 total, start with two Unbound tees and one dress, then add.

FAQ

Do I need everything to be merino?

No. A capsule works when pieces mix. Encircled’s MicroModal pants and modal Chrysalis Cardi sit happily next to merino tees.
